Is The Water In Your Home Making You Sick?
When you think about dirty water, the first thing that pops into your mind is “don’t drink the water in Mexico!” And then you remember a horror story about ice cubes in a drink in Mexico and the ensuing time spent on the toilet the rest of the trip.
But what if I told you the tap water in the United States isn’t all that much better. That it could be making you sick in other ways.
For example, if you live in Southern California, you need to worry about Hexavalent Chromium, and if you live in Flint, Michigan, you need to worry about Lead. Who wants more to worry about? Not me.
But these specific issues aren’t the entire problem. The rest of us in America need to be concerned too.
What is in our water?
Dr. Hyman says toxins like microbes, pesticides, plastics, prescription meds, metals, chlorine, fluoride and others are poisoning our water supply.
And the main cause of worry – Chlorine.
But what does this mean to our health?
Chloroform gas (which is chlorine vapors) and the associated DBPs (disinfection byproducts) may increase your risk of
And…Chloroform gas alone can cause dizziness, nausea, and general fatigue
And worse, these harmful gases build up in our homes until we vent them out or prevent them from coming in!
Drinking Water is only part of the story
Okay, so can I just filter my drinking water and be safe? NO!
Your dietary water is only a small percentage of the water coming in contact with you, and used in your home.
It is recommended you get 8, 8oz glasses of water per day. That means you are consuming 64oz (0.5 gallon). The typical shower is 8 minutes long and 16-17 gallons of water will run over your body during this time.
The shower is the single largest user of water in a home. Second, third, and fourth are toilets, washing machines, and dishwashers.
Above we said the main worry is Chlorine and the DBPs to our health. Specifically, the issue is at its worst when the water is hot (showers, baths, washing machine, and dishwasher). This is because the steam carry’s the Chloroform gas (chlorine vapors) and DBPs in the water into the air for us to breath!
A hot, soothing bath and shower… (from Dr. Mercola)
Opens your skin pores and allows easier absorption of chlorine and other contaminants directly into your body…
Creates chemical steam, which you inhale, and can contain up to 20 times the chlorine levels of tap water…
Breaks down your skin’s natural moisture barrier, resulting in drier skin, rashes, drier hair…
So, if a Brita water filter won’t solve the problem, what is the solution?
There is a Solution!
You have two main options.
Whole House Filtration System (amazing results, but pricy $$$$)
- Culligan: https://culliganwatercolumbus.com/products/whole-house-water-filter
- A simple Google search will also provide multiple options
Individual Water Source Filters (low cost $, but requires multiple filters and maintenance)
- Drinking & Cooking Water: https://www.aquatruwater.com/?src=affiliate&aid=24943
- Shower & Bath Water: https://www.rainshower.com/new/index.html
If you go with the whole house filtration system, we recommend you go with at least a dual chamber reverse osmosis filtration system with UV light exposure. But please do your research on what is best for you and your family.
We personally filter our drinking & cooking water, and use shower filters. We plan to upgrade to a whole home option in the future, but this first step solved a big portion of our water usage, and kept the cost manageable. Additionally, we open up our windows at least once a month during the cold months and at every chance possible when the weather is nicer.
These simple, low cost changes for us have made a huge improvement on our respiratory health, skin, and hair. If you can do the whole house option, please do. If this is too big a step, then spend the $100-$200 dollars and do what we did. Filter your showers and kitchen water sources.
You will love how you feel and look!
